Dr. Daren Mandrusiak was born and raised in North Eastern Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta, and completed veterinary school at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His professional interests include exotic animal medicine as well as soft tissue surgery and dentistry. Dr. Mandrusiak has a particular interest in avian medicine – he is a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and often describes himself as a bird nerd and is always happiest when examining or treating a patient of the feathered variety. Previously he has had the opportunity to travel internationally and gain mentorship and training from some of the world’s leading avian veterinarians. In the winter, Dr. Mandrusiak travels to Northern Saskatchewan to volunteer as a race veterinarian for the Canadian Sled Dog Challenge. He finds these athletes and their bond with their mushers inspiring and enjoys the challenge that performing medicine in remote locations can bring. He finds dogs with a job fascinating, but never holds it against the unemployed variety. One of his favorite parts of the job, aside from the feathers and the fur, is getting the chance to work as a team with owners to provide the highest level of care for his patients. He finds that communication and compassion are his most valuable tools in practice. Outside of work Dr. Mandrusiak enjoys everything outdoors. He can often be found hiking, backpacking, kayaking, fishing, skiing or doing almost anything in nature. When he is not busy working, volunteering or spending time in the outdoors, he is likely spending time with his fiancée and their two pets Willoughby and Breeze.
